Modern Christmas Trees

IMG_2047.jpg

HELLO modern Christmas trees! These are FANTASTIC! They're light weight, inexpensive & clean. It's not easy to find a clean, modern Christmas concept - so we were thrilled with these. Keep scrolling to see how they worked/happened & some specifics etc. LOL.

If you didn't know it, triangles are NOT easy to make! It took several smart brains to figure out the angles. With a little bit of a photo tour, you'll see them come into real life!

IMG_1459

See what happens if you don't figure angles out right?

We cannot take full credit - Here was our inspiration! I screen shotted this from instagram in 2013 & I'm so glad I did. These appeared to be made out of metal. We chose to use wood, to keep cost down, since its a (4 week) short lived stage set. If you search The Big Jingle 2013 you'll find more images.

Next we've mocked up the future 16', 14', 12' models...here Larry is thinking hard about how to do these.

Now save this for next year, or the next year AND be sure to share pics with me & my team when you do make them! YES!!! GO!!!

UPDATE!!! Here are notes that we've sent to a lot of people wanting more information. Our tech director provided this info & more pictures. We hope it helps with finishing off these sweet trees! *thumbs up!*

1. For the vertical boards, a combination of 2 X 2 and 1 X 2 were used. The 1 X 2 did help to secure the Coroplast to the 2 X 2. It also cover the edges of the Coroplast.

IMG_0866.jpeg

2. As you can see, we did not cover the Coroplast. The use of the 2 X 2 and 1 X 2 provides adequate cover for the edge of the Coroplast.

3. The boards are secured at the top with deck screws. and secured to each other. Larry did not use anything fancy to secure the boards to each other. I believe the three photos below of the top will assist you in understanding how to secure the boards to each other.

Easter 2015 Stage Design

IMG_5880.jpg

Ok, this might quite possibly be the funnest, wild set we've done & it was a TOTAL BLAST! There are a LOT of pictures, so I'll make the explanation short! We wanted to build a stage that also worked well for our next series, Stories Matter. Our team decided on a conceptual theme "reclaimed." We went looking for pieces we could "reclaim" & the concept blew up into something awesome!

IMG_5812

 IMG_5219

IMG_5219

Here are our initial thoughts & sketches...you know, first thoughts have a guitar player on a buffet. lol. The back drop is split it 2 options - either make giant drum lights or hang furniture.

We also liked images we found on Pinterest of furniture stacked. That totally works!

 IMG_5205

IMG_5205

We all wanted big bold colors, so we were going for the fiesta ware colors..

 IMG_5214

IMG_5214

Here comes some pics of furniture we gathered mostly from a Habitat for Humanity ReStore near us. We shopped for pieces with charm & character.

Next we'll paint it all. I love chalk painting because you don't need to prep the pieces. No sanding, priming, just wipe it down & go for it. BUT, most colors available are muted & earthy. Remember, we wanted bold Fiestaware. The Lowes near us helped so much & shared their recipe. Holy moly, this was the easiest thing ever & worked. Tried & true! Check out the first piece. This is one of the adorable sewing tables & my friend Maria who is now a master furniture renovator!

Now that it's painted, we moved it to the front of the stage so that we have space to build a "gallery wall" of furniture to hang.

Rethink STAGE :: String Art

creatives7.jpg

Let's start at the very beginning! I saved this picture from Instagram of the Catalyst conference, as a huge inspiration. I waited for a one word series to come along that could use a big, bold stage design to support what we wanted to communicate.

Steve Jobs said, "Creativity is just connecting things.." This was freeing to me a few years ago. Just keep your eyes & ears always open & save what you see.

Dots will start connecting & you will strategically pull some "awesome" off yourself!

Here's a quick photo tour of how we made this happen for our stage in "RETHINK." We planned to use 7 pieces of basic plywood, 4' x 8' sheets, painted black. This would make the piece 8' x 28'. I also wanted the word to overlap the seams so that you'd get the optical illusion in the end.

 IMG_0863

IMG_0863

 IMG_0864

IMG_0864

 IMG_0865

IMG_0865

Our handy friend & volunteer, Larry painted & prepped the plywood & we stood it up on our stage. We realized we like 24' better, so we took one down.

 IMG_0766

IMG_0766

Here's how it stands from behind with support...

 IMG_0767

IMG_0767

Next, we projected the series font & traced it with chalk.

 IMG_0771

 IMG_0774

IMG_0774

 IMG_0783

IMG_0783

Then, a crew of volunteers came & added nails around all of the letters & the perimeters of all the boards.

IMG_0819

 IMG_0820

IMG_0820

We took the "r" & strung it for a sample before our TEAM NIGHT, when a huge crew will string up the rest. You'll see that we also added random nails to be more start points in between the letter & the border.

There are NO rules. Seriously. Go for it & be WOW'd!

Team night is a night for all Crossroads Creatives (music, tech & video) to come for dinner, vision, training, inspiration & time together (quarterly). We had all of the boards prepped & ready. 5-8 people came around each one & strung them in about 45 min.

Remember that extra piece? We built a quick "dinners" board, because we also decided to do "rethink dinners" after Saturday services in the series. They're unreal & need their own post!

Now go & build this for your church, classroom, kids room, studio.. or save it until your dots connect for a project down the road that you don't even know about yet. And when you go make your version, please share it with me! That's the best part of sharing ideas & how to's!

***Finishing touches before our FINAL execution..

We strung nail to nail, outlining each letter & board. This was meticulous, but certainly finishes it off & makes the letters pop even more.

Scaffolding Stage

122-3 We met & met & dreamed & would draw up what our scaffolding stage could end up looking like...here are a few versions of probably 20+. Not kidding. I love my team & that they're willing to give hours every week while we create & walk a sometimes slow & winding road. But if you're willing to walk it, then seeing it come to fruition is always so amazing. Take a look!

IMG_5691IMG_4834IMG_4866

We found this pic on pinterest & it ended up being our inspiration. I have no idea where it's from, or I'd give them credit!

IMG_4870

I also didn't get pictures of the individual pieces. Here are some that a grabbed from google images, in case you're like me & know NOTHING about scaffolding. We obviously didn't have wheels at the bottom..but this does basically show the different pieces we used.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 3.08.16 PM IMG_0616

Now it's go time - We rented it all from Grand Rental Station, here in Northern Colorado for 8 weeks. These guys were great! As you can imagine, it took many trips & many different people getting more pieces as we were customizing it to our stage.

Here we go - - now check out all of the pics below as it comes together...

IMG_5686IMG_5697

A 2nd drum kit is going up on this highest platform.

IMG_5702IMG_5703IMG_5707

The heart you see going up is worth it's own post. It'll come soon! It was the centerpiece of our series, LOVE WORKS.

IMG_5706IMG_5709IMG_5711

Me getting more platforms - stuffing them in my Honda Odyssey!

IMG_5729IMG_5731

The chain link fencing added a ton. Plus we can hang hubcaps & other circle garbage from it...

IMG_5775Then start adding metallic, circle pieces.

IMG_5807

Here it is in action... staging always gets amazing once you add lights, haze & your favorite people!

IMG_5891IMG_5849IMG_5903IMG_5833

Some of my favorite instagrams:

122-3  IMG_1807IMG_5958

I'm going to wrap this up with the ultimate cast pic of some Crossroads Creatives who were on the Easter team 2014. How super awesome is this. Come. On!

IMG_5936

So, if you are a creative leader who builds sets - go build a scaffolding stage. It will be your & your community's favorite stage ever! And as always, send me pics if you do!
